Xavi Masip, PhD
Full Professor

Short bio

XAVI MASIP got a MSc and Ph.D. degrees in telecommunications engineering both from the Technical University of Catalonia. He is currently a full professor in the Computer Architecture department at the UPC, was invited professor at University Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC) in 2011 and 2012 and is one of the co-founders of the FOOXY initiative.

After more than one decade at the Advanced Broadband Communications Center in Barcelona, in 2006 he was awarded with one of the largest Infrastructures Projects ever (Catalan Government) to found the Advanced Network Architectures Lab (CRAAX) at the UPC Campus in Vilanova. From its formal creation in 2008, Xavi is leading the activities in the lab. His publications include more than 200 papers in national and international refereed journals and conferences in the areas of cloud/edge continuum, cybersecurity, AI processes optimization, health, etc, some book chapters as well as a didactic&practical book on the cloud continuum.  Xavi has given several invited talks (IBM, Huawei, Cisco, UPEC, AdHocNets2013, etc.). He has also been member of the organizing team of many national and international conferences, serving as general chair for some of them (ONDM2008, WWIC2011, NOC2012, Saconet2014, Med-Hoc-Net2016, IEEE IWQoS2017, DRCN2023&2024). He serves as editor for the Optical Switching and Networking (OSN) journal and for the Computer Communications Journal, has served as editor for the Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing (WCMC) journal and as invited editor for OSN, International Journal of Internet Protocol, Technology (IJIPT) and the International Journal of Parallel, Emergent and Distributed Systems (IJPEDS). Xavi has participated and/or led many national and regional projects and EU contracts from the FP5, FP6, FP7, H2020 and HE programs (Lion, Nobel1, Nobel2, EuQoS, E-Net, E-NEXT, Content, e-Photon/One, e-Photon/One+, ONE, PACE, CIPSEC, mF2C, FISHY, the currently running ICOS, PHOENi2X, COBALT, SEC4TD, HORSE, ODEON, CYCLOPS, MANOLO, AI-DAPT and those about to start MARE, 6G-LEADER and ACCOMPLISH). Xavi has also led contracts with the industry (Cisco, Huawei, IBM) and with other institutions (i2cat as well as local and regional governments). In early 2013 he co-founded MATPOL Technologies, a Bay Area based start-up., and since 2017 he is working in the FOOXY initiative in the health sector along with researchers at the Hospital Clinic de Barcelona. Since 2011 till 2023 Xavi was the coordinator of the Computer Architecture PhD program at the UPC.

Xavi’s contributions were recognized with a 2016 IBM Faculty Award.
